The Ylvisaker Cup, second leg of the NPC 16-Goal Championship, resument through Saturday January 31 and Sunday February 1, with two games on Saturday and one played on Sunday, at Patagones Polo Club and the National Polo Center (NPC), respectively, set in Wellington, Florida, United States. Following the two remaining contests of the series (Iglehart Cup and Outback Cup), the NPC 16-Goal Championship will come to an end with the culminating match, at the NPC on Sunday April 12.

 

The Ylvisaker Cup sees fifiteen teams up to 16 goals, in competition. Teams are split in three leagues.

 

Saturday January 31 saw the clash of the winners of the recent Joe Barry Memorial Cup, Las Brisas, and the current Ylvisaker Cup title holders, Bientina, with the former victorious 12-9. Up next, Clearwater claimed a 15-8 win over BTA.

 

In the meantime, on Sunday February 1, 90210 Polo earned a narrow 7-6 win over Dracarys. The match was decided in extra chukka with Joaquin Panelo producing the winning goal. During the Sunday game winning presentation, Panelo was named MVP.

 

 

The Ylvisaker Cup was established in 2003, as a tribute to William T. “Bill” Ylvisaker, a true pioneer of the development of polo in the Wellington, Florida area, whose contributions allowed the growth of the sport in the 70s and 80s. Among others, Bill Ylvisaker founded the Palm Beach Polo and Country Club; Palm Beach Polo Club flourished and the town of Wellington sprung up around it, going on to successfully host not only, polo but numerous other equestrian sports. Bill Ylvisaker, who started playing interscholastic tournaments in the 40s, reached a handicap of 7, and he is the winner of the US Open and the USPA Gold Cup, and also claimed the Coronation Cup, in England, twice. Mr. Ylvisaker also founded the Polo Training Foundation, in 1967, and served as Chairman of the USPA through 1970-1975, and was inducted in the Polo Hall of Fame, in 1996.

 

 

The Ylvisaker Cup will continue on Monday February 2 and Tuesday February 3.
