Tonkawa and Scone will play the final of the USPA Gold Cup, the second leg of The Gauntlet of Polo, following their respective semifinal wins against La Indiana and Park Place, on Wednesday, March 24. The tournament is hosted by International Polo Club Palm Beach, and sees nine teams, up to 22 goals, compete.

Tonkawa and La Indiana played the day’s opener, in the clash of the Escobar brothers, with Lucas and Nico representing Tonkawa and La Indiana, respectively. The match got off to an easy start for Tonkawa, who dominated the scoreboard throughout the first five chukkas.By the start of the sixth, they had secured a 11-9 advantage. But La Indiana were not ready to give up. They made an impressive comeback to outscore Tonkawa 3-1 and tie the match 12-all, sending the game into extra chukka. With only 31 seconds into OT, Fran Elizalde came through to score his fourth, and most important goal, in the game, securing Tonkawa’s place in the final.

Up next, Scone and Park Place went head to head in the second semifinal. The first half of the match was hard fought, until David Paradice’s team seized the reins in the second half, securing a commanding 6-4 advantage. Park Place fought back, and in the following chukka they brought the difference down to just one goal (6-7). A fierce sixth chukka followed, with an extra chukka on the horizon, but that was not what Adolfo Cambiaso and Peke Gonzalez had in mind. They scored a goal apiece, sealing the victory and qualifying for Sunday’s final.
