And we’re off! The much anticipated spring season in Argentina has just begun with the first matchdate of the 61st. Jockey Club Open, the tournament that preceeds the most significant polo trophy worldwide, the Triple Crown. Considered one of the most important tournaments of the season in Argentina, the 61st. Jockey Club Open, which is underway at the Jockey Club, in San Isidro, Province of Buenos Aires, sees five teams between 28 and 34 goals, in participation.
The competition’s format changed for this edition – all the teams must play two games. The best four will qualify to semifinals.
La Natividad La Dolfina and Don Ercole opened fire on Tuesday September 8, with the former featuring Lolo Castagnola within the lineup. Joining the legendary Lolo are his two sons, Camilo and Barto, as well as his nephew, Poroto Cambiaso. A lethal combo, indeed – the cousins won two consecutive titles together, in 2023 and 2024. With regards to Don Ercole, the lineup is the same of last year, when they teamed up with La Aguada – Facundo Cruz Llosa, Kristos Magrini, Pedro Zacharias and Felipe Vercellino.
The contest was unexpectedly leveled; it took La Natividad La Dolfina almost five minutes to open the scores, courtesy of Lolo Castagnola. However, and thoroghout the six chukkas of play, the Cañuelas-based lineup widened their advantage and were victorious 15-10.
The Jockey Club Open will resume on Thursday September 10, with two matches – La Natividad La Dolfina vs. Las Monjitas, and La Fe vs. La Irenita.
THE FINAL OF THE JOCKEY CLUB OPEN IS DUE ON SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 19.
