The high goal 50th Anniversary Gold Cup kicked off on Tuesday, August 17, with two matches. Marqués de Riscal and BN Polo were victorious in the tournament’s main category. The 50th Anniversary Gold Cup marks the third stage of the 50th Anniversary Torneo Internacional de Polo by La Reserva Club de Sotogrande.
Marqués de Riscal and BP Polo went head to head at Ayala Polo Club. Marqués de Riscal is considered one of the best teams of the season so far, while BP Polo boasts Adolfo Cambiaso and his 15-years-old son, Poroto, in the lineup. Alejandro Aznar’s Spanish team maintained the lead, but BP Polo fought back. At the end of the day, Marqués de Riscal took the crucial 11-8 debut win.
Next, BN Polo, recent runners up of the Terralpa Silver Cup, took on Dos Lunas La Hacienda (who received one goal on handicap) on Ayala’s ground 1. Dos Lunas La Hacienda held the advantage until the fourth chukka, when BP Polo bounced back scoring five unanswered goals to establish a 10-7 lead. Dos Lunas La Hacienda regrouped and fought their way to an 11-all tie with just one minute to go. That’s when Marcos Araya gained possession of the ball and scored to give BN Polo the 12-11 victory.
The 50th Anniversary Gold Cup resumes on Wednesday, August 18, with three games at Ayala Polo Club.
Sotogrande’s 50th anniversary tournament is being played at Ayala Polo Club, Santa María Polo Club, and Dos Lunas Polo & Dressage. The tournament sees twelve teams, split into two categories, compete. The high goal is for 18-20 goal teams, while the medium goal is for 12-14 goal teams.
