El Gouna Beach Polo Kings came to an end on Saturday April 11, after many days of competition in the exclusive destination, El Gouna, set on the shores of the Red Sea. The tournament was back after a 17 years absence; and the comeback was a huge success, indeed, thanks to Mohammad El Sewedy’s remarkable efforts.
The contest saw six teams, in lineups made of three players each, partake, featuring local players as well as those from Argentina, France and Poland.
The last day of action kicked off very early with the two subsidiary finals. The fifth place went to Aston Martin, after beating Sawinest; Warp Drive and La Roche Posay played for the third place, with the former victorious.
Egyptian Police and El Gouna clashed in the much expected championship match. A game that ended tied at 2-all in the first chukka, although both teams had the opportunity to exchange the lead.
Things would starts to change in the second chukka when Egyptian Police outscored their contenders 4-0 to earn a 6-2 advantage. The third chukka ended 1-1, but the black jerseys remained in the lead, with a four goal advantage.
A thrilling last chukka would follow – Eduardo Menendez quickly scored to put Egyptian Police 8-3 up; but the white jerseys were not about to give up that easily. With only 30 seconds in regulation time, El Gouna bounced back and were only one goal behind, 7-8. But efforts didn’t pay off – luck was on Egyptian Police’s side who won the title.
