The qualification stage of the CV Whitney Cup, the first leg of The Gauntlet of Polo, came to an end on Sunday, February 28, with Scone and Tonkawa claiming wins. The tournament sees nine teams, up to 22 goals, compete.

Scone, with Joao Aranha (0) filling in for patron David Paradice (0), worked well as a team to defeat Aspen-Dutta Corp 12-9. Aspen-Dutta Corp received one goal on handicap and saw the return of Lucas Diaz Alberdi following an absence due to injury.

Later in the afternoon, Tonkawa made an impressive comeback to take a 10-9 win over Pilot in extra chukka. Pilot’s Facundo Pieres had to leave the field in the fourth chukka due to injury (torn muscle) and was replaced by his brother Nicolás. Despite the changes, the 2019 champions remained in the lead throughout the whole match. However, in the last chukka, Tonkawa fought back and scored a couple of goals to tie the game 9-all, sending the match into extra time. That was when Francisco Elizalde sealed the deal for Tonkawa by scoring the golden goal in the last second of that extra chukka.

In Sunday’s prize giving at IPC, Keko Magrini was named MVP, and Open Lujuria, ridden by Gonzalito Pieres, took BPP honors.

The CV Whitney Cup final is scheduled for Sunday, March 7.
