The first leg of  The Gauntlet of Polo, the CV Whitney Cup, continued on Sunday, February 21, with two matches at International Polo Club Palm Beach. The tournament sees nine teams, up to 22 goals, compete.

In the day’s opener, early in the morning, Park Place defeated Aspen-Dutta Corp by a wide margin of 9 goals to 3. Aspen-Dutta Corp were unable to hold Park Place back, despite there only being a handful of goals in the first half. Park Place took off from the fourth chukka onwards, scoring sufficient goals to secure a solid advantage. Despite losing their key man, Juan Britos, due to injury in the fifth (he was replaced by Tomás García del Río), Park Place managed to take a comfortable 9-2 lead with one chukka left to play. Stewart Armstrong scored one more goal for Aspen-Dutta Corp in the last chukka, but it was too late for his organisation.

The moment everyone was waiting for came later in the afternoon: Adolfo Cambiaso’s much anticipated return to IPC following a three-year absence. He joined David Paradice’s Scone, alongside his son, Poroto, and Peke Gonzalez. Scone, who turned heads when they claimed the 2019 Queen’s Cup in England, made their tournament debut against Santa Clara. Thanks to their team play, and the five goals scored by Peke Gonxalez, Scone had no trouble dominating Escobar’s team and taking the 12-5 win.

In the Sunday presentation, Frappera took BPP honours.

The CV Whitney Cup final is scheduled for Sunday, March 7.

The Gauntlet of Polo is streamed live on GLOBAL POLO.
