On Saturday July 15, Dubai and Marqués de Riscal earned thier tickets to the semifinsls of the British Open Polo Championship for the Cowdray Gold Cup, following their respective wins against Green Gates and La Magdeleine in the first two quater final contests. Dubai, last year’s runner up, and Marqués de Riscal will await for the remaining teams for the next stage.

 

In the opening game, played in Brooks, Dubai, who ended on top of the general standings, had fight hard against Green Gates, who presented battle up to the end. The first half belonged to Rashid Albwardy’s foursome, who reached a 7-5 lead by half time. Green Gates dominated the fourth chukka, outscoring Dubai 3-0, thanks to Fran Elizalde’s remarkable performance. Green Gates, in a fantastic comeback, started the fifth chukka with a 8-7 advantage. But from then on, Dubai’s ace of spades, Camilo Castagnola, seized the reins, and the green jerseys managed to re-take the lead to claim the win and the first ticket to semifinals

 

Up next, La Magdeleine and Marqués de Riscal clashed in Lawns 2, in a very balanced match, based mostly in a similar playing style of both teams. Despite La Magdeleine managed to remain in the lead, Marqués de Riscal were on their tail; they overcame a two goal deficit in the fifth chukka,and after Alexandre Garese’s team missed a to convert a couple of penalties in the last chukka, Guillermo Caset secured Alejandro Aznar’s lineup the second spot to the semifinals, through a penalty conversion.
