The UAE National Day Cup 2020, held in honour of the country’s 49th year of the Spirit of the Union, saw seven teams compete at Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club. The qualifying matches resulted into a Subsidiary Final between Mahra Polo and Ankora Polo, and a final between AM Polo and Green Gates Polo.

 

In the Subsidiary Final, Ankora took the lead from the start and maintained a two-goal advantage by halftime. Mahra had scored goals to stay in the game, but Ankora kept up the pace and took complete control of the last two chukkas, claiming the 8-5 win. 

 

SUBSIDIARY FINAL: ANKORA 8-5 MAHRA

ANKORA: Khalid Alomran -1, Maxi Malacalza 3, Jose von Potobsky 5, Tomas Palacios 3. Total: 10.

MAHRA: Rashid Al Habtoor 0, Tarik Al Habtoor 1, Segundo Amadori 4, Jacinto Amadori 5. Total: 10.

 

Prior to the start of the final, AM Polo and Green Gates Polo teams proudly displayed the UAE Flag as the UAE National Anthem was played. Once the action began, Green Gates took control, leading 3.5 goals to nil by the end of the second chukker. 

 

AM Polo met them halfway with two goals scored in the penultimate chukker. The tension rose in the final chukka as a penalty shot from AM Polo team took the goal difference down to half a goal.  Both teams fought for the win, but in the end Tomy Iriarte stole the victory from Green Gates in the last seconds, and AM Polo won the match 4.5 goals to 4.
