Our travels through the East Andes with Jakob Von Plessen were far from tame. Never underestimate someone who rides within meters of lions and through croc infested rivers guiding rides through Africa to settle for anything less than an adventure full of thrills and wonderful memories.

After fifteen years horse safari guiding in Africa, Von Plessen set up his own riding adventures in Patagonia four years ago. Best described as extreme trekking, it was easily one of the most exhilarating experiences possible on a horse and we didn’t even getting out of a walk.

Insane views and heart stopping riding filled everyone with pure awe at the terrain covered as we followed along the narrow winding tracks amongst the incredible volcanic landscape. Felipe, the gaucho who leads the way through secret passages in the mountains, knows area like the back of his hand.

A truly authentic experience the trip combined the luxuries at base camp of hot running water and wifi to the rustic adventure of living in the wild in the mountains, sleeping under the stars if you wished, while the horses grazing close by. Delicious traditional Argentine gaucho guisos for dinner around the camp fire were very welcome after completing several hours in the saddle.

Polo, hunting, even galloping away from charging elephants in the Masai Mara all get the adrenaline pumping and this journey was no less exciting. It was an insight to genuine gaucho way of life in a special, magical part of Argentina with incredible scenery, for sure I was not the only one sad to leave.
