The polo community received a devastating blow on Thursday June 12. Aureus’ patron, Sunjay Kapur, passed away unexpectedly, while he was playing the subsidiary semifinal of the Queen’s Cup, against Sujan Indian Tigers, at Guards Polo Club. A successful billionaire businesman, born in India, Sunjay Kapur was only 53-years-old.
Although it is not yet clear the cause of this terribly and unfortunate event, it is believed the death was caused by a sudden heart attack.
Sunjay Kapur and his team, Aureus, were playing the high goal season in England for the first time, with a lineup that includes the Panelo brothers (Tomás and Benjamín), and Mark Tomlinson. They claimed the last Prince of Wales Trophy, that took place at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, and they were participating of the Queen’s Cup. Their next step was the British Polo Open Championship for the Cowdray Gold Cup. And although it was confirmed that Aureus will be playing at Cowdray Park Polo Club, it is not yet confirmed who will fill in for the unfortunate Sunjay.
PoloLine wishes to express deep condolences and sadness over this terrible blow for the polo community, and send love, comfort and a healing embrace to Sunjay’s loved ones – his wife Priya, their children and the whole family. Our thoughts, love and prayers are with them.
