The inaugural season of PLYRS Polo Club is setting a new precedent for polo in Wellington, with new tournaments beginning to write their first chapters in one of the most competitive calendars in the sport worldwide.

Last Saturday, February 21, the final of the club’s first 18-goal handicap tournament was played at PLYRS Polo Club. Four teams took part at the start of the competition, and Clearwater La Irenita and Aspen Two Trees overcame the challenges to reach the title match.

The championship game was evenly contested from the outset. It wasn’t until the fourth chukker that a slight edge began to emerge in favor of one of the teams. Clearwater La Irenita started to turn the tide after the first two chukkers ended tied; they claimed the third period and then built a three-goal lead in the fourth.

Aspen Two Trees then tried to gradually cut the deficit, entering the final chukker two goals behind. However, the team featuring standout player Raúl Colombres (who replaced Beltrán Laulhé) held firm and secured the title with a 10–9 victory.
