The Potrillos Cup, known also as the “Palermo of the kids”, is the perfect competition for those children who are giving their first steps in polo, with probably many of them to become the biggest stars of the sport. History says that the Potrillos Cup was estanlished in 1962 by Carlos Acuña, Roberto Tonnerlier and Antonio Heguy, to be played at the Club indios, in San Miguel, Province of Buenos Aires. On that occasion, the tournament saw only two teams in participation, but over the years the growth and improvement has been truly remarkable. The 2025 edition of the Potrillos Cup took place on Monday December 8, at the Argentine Association of Polo Headquarters, in Pilar.
Several of the most significant names of polo have played this tournament at least once – from Adolfo Cambiaso to the Pieres brothers. The Potrillos Cup sees kids between 4-years-old to 15-years-old, but from that first tournament, back in 1962, the contest have been developed on a high scale. As an example, today the Potrillos Cup admit players up to 4 goals, something it was impossible before. Adolfo Cambiaso was unable to play it because he got his first handicap at 11-years-old; but unlike his father, his son, Poroto, won the tournament in different categories.
The aim of the Potrillos Cup is not a competition. There’s a code conduct, of course, that could be applied to the Triple Crown, as well. The kids players are requested to abide to the rules, not to argue with umpires, behave well and show respect. In the meantime, it’s crucial for parents to encourage their kids, to acknowledge their efforts and to be an example for the younger ones. “The spirit of this tournament is not the result, but for kids to have fun, focus on polo and make friends”, explains the legendary Ruso Heguy.
