La Hechicera ran out the champions of the Cicero Cup, following the final that took place at Cowdray Park Polo Club. In their fourth attempt, Pablo Galante Escobar’s foursome finally lifted their first ever trophy in England, after defeating Amanara’s Nicky Sen.
Pablo spoke to PoloLine, and he emphasized on the importance of working together as a team, and the great level of play of his team mates, as well as what’s coming up next for his organisation in the remaining of the polo season in England.
The Cicero Cup final was a remarkable match; you were leading, then Amanara bounced back and at the end of the day, La Hechicera made it. What was the key change to widen the gap in the last chukka and claim the title?
I think the key factor was to maintain the discipline. When Amanara came closer to us, we had a conversation, and we agreed we had to focus on discipline and what we were doing. Have Malcolm Borwick as the back, Santos Merlos controlling the ball, Ollie Cudmore being here and there and myself trying to create some trouble to their good players. But I guess the most important thing was to maintain the discipline.
What do you consider the best feature of this team?
I think the best we have is that we play as a team. We are not a team of individuals; obviously I am not able to do some things, but we have three great players who know exactly what to do, which is play as a team; I do my best to contribute. Basically, the idea is to help each other.
What is the best about playing the season in England?
To win is the best of the season in England. When you win, is a special feeling, and this is the first time we won with La Hechicera. This is our four year playing together, and we are happy to have won at last. In addition, England is a fantastic spot to play polo. And on a personal side, to me it’s been a privilege to play with polo royalty. I am very fortunate to be able to play with them.
What’s coming up next for La Hechicera?
Well, we are currently playing 18-goal, the Duke of Sutherland Trophy. We have Nicolás Pieres subbing in for Ollie Cudmore. We are committed to play the 15-goal Bryan Bethell Cup by early June, as well. And I hope we are able to win again.
