La Dolfina Scone, DUS, The Dutta Corp and Pilot are the four lineups that will be able to play the semifinals of the CV Whitney Cup, the opening tournament of the prestigious The Gauntlet of Polo. The last league phase of the competition took place at the National Polo Center (NPC), located in Wellington, Florida, United States, on Friday February 20. It’s worth to remember that The Gauntlet Of Polo, established in 2019 and completed by the USPA Gold Cup and the US Open, is played at the NPC in its entirety.
The CV Whitney Cup sees nine teams up to 22 goals. Teams are split in three leagues.
In the day’s first match, Pilot – the only team who claimed the entire Gauntlet of Polo in its inaugural year, 2019 – defeated BA 15-9. Curtis Pilot & Co remained unbeaten (2-0), while BTA weren’t able to win. Up next, in the father/son clash, La Dolfina Scone – with Poroto Cambiaso – also maintained their undefeated status (2-o), following their win against title holders, La Dolfina Tamera (1-1), with Poroto’s father, Adolfo Cambiaso. The day closed with the match between newcomers DUS and The Dutta Corp, with the former victorious by a narrow 12-11. Despite the loss, The Dutta Corp with a 1-1 record, managed to step into the next stage, while DUS won their two games.
The semifinals of the CV Whitney Cup will take place on Wednesday February 25:
1pm: La Dolfina Scone (2-0) vs. DUS (2-0)
5pm: The Dutta Corp (1-1) vs. Pilot (2-0)
Originally known as the U.S. Handicap, the C.V. Whitney Cup was established in 1979, and first competed for on handicap in conjunction with the U.S. Open Polo Championship. In 1988, the tournament was renamed for C.V. (Cornelius Vanderbilt “Sonny”) Whitney, an avid polo player and three-time winner of the U.S. Open (1928, 1937, 1938) and son of 10-goal Hall of Famer Harry Payne Whitney. Inducted into the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame in 2022, Whitney left a lasting mark in polo. Rising to a 6-goal handicap during his playing career that spanned the “golden era” of polo, Whitney was a formidable factor in all major USPA tournaments.
The Gauntlet of Polo will follow with the USPA Gold Cup and will come to an end on April 26, with the much anticipated championship match of the US Open.
