The 65th. Queen’s Cup is set to kick off on Tuesday May 20, at Guards Polo Club, in Windsor Great Park, England. The club’s premier tournament and one of the most significant competitions of the international polo calendar in Europe and worldwide, will see nineteen teams up to 22 goals, partake.
The current reigning champions, Talandracas, won’t be among the participating teams. Otherwise, Gaston and Aureus, the recent winners of the two first 22-goal tournaments (Trippetts Challenge and Prince of Wales Trophy, respectively), will be playing the prestigious contest. Hazel Jackson is playing with Dubai, as the only female professional player. Meanwhile, the Cambiasos, father and son, are split in two lineups – Adolfo will play with Scone, and his son, Poroto, was hired by La Dolfina/Marqués de Riscal. In addition, many new teams are making their debut in the Queen’s Cup – Calatagan (with Facundo Pieres), Jehangiri (with Gonzalito Pieres’ comeback to England), Genrosaleo-Clinova, Aureus, Ojo Caliente and Kazak.
The Queen’s Cup has been played since 1960, and was established in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on September 8, 2022. Her son, His Majesty King Charles III, is the current President of Guards Polo Club, a position he inherited from his father, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who founded the club 70 years ago, on January 25, 1955 and remained as the President until his passing, on April 9, 2021. Today, His Majesty King Charles III is in charge to present the trophy to the winning patron, as his mother did before.
The championship match of the Queen’s Cup is due on Sunday June 15.
The order of play of the first day of the Queen’s Cup, on Tuesday May 20, is the following:
11,30am: Dubai Polo Team vs Jehangiri
2pm: Signet Thai Polo vs. UAE
4,30pm: La Dolfina Scone vs. Ferne Park
