On Sunday May 11, Cowdray Vikings ran out the champions of the Tyro Cup, after the final played at the club located in Midhurst, West Sussex England. The Vikings lift the trophy following a 8-6 win over Maíz Dulce.
George spoke to PoloLine, and told everything about this experience, the difficulties to combine his work and his passion, and what’s coming up next in the current season in England.
First and foremost, George, congratulations for a big tournament. Why do you think you are the champions?
Good question. Well, I was unable to be in the first match, which, by the way, was the only one we lost. From then onwards, we won all of them, but in the last seconds by only a goal or two. The semifinal was decided in extra chukka. I guess the key men of this team are Manu (Elizalde) and Ollie (Cork), who are solid enough to bounce back, thanks to their skills.
What do you feel about playing with your mother?
It’s wonderful, I always enjoy playing with my mom. We argue a bit in the ground, sometimes, but it’s all a part of the game. Our aim to play this tournament was enjoy and have fun, because it’s always very special to play with your family. I’ve been fortunate enough to play other competitions with my mother, here, at Cowdray, and it’s always a special feeling.
You are currently undergoing a grow in your work, but at the same time you have time to enjoy to play polo. How difficult is to combine your job and playing polo?
It’s difficult, I daresay. I am about to start a new job, which will make things quite a bit difficult for me, because I won’t be able to play during weekdays. As a matter of fact, I barely played last year, because I was doing a master in France and Singapur; I mean, I’ve just played four games, and some practices and stick-and-ball, no more than that. It’s not easy to combine the time to work and play polo, but I am hopeful that I can find some time to play more.
The season in England is long and has many tournaments. Are you going to play other tournament?
Yes, I will be able to play the Cicero Cup weekend games. I guess my first game is scheduled for next Tuesday, but I won’t be playing due to my new job. But I will be there in the weekends. Up next, let’s wait and see whether I can reach the semifinals or the final.
