Next week marks the beginning of the most competitive polo season in the world: Argentina’s spring season. While it is still uncertain whether the San Jorge Open will be held on Saturday, September 6, what is confirmed is the start of the Jockey Club Open.
This will be the 60th edition of the prestigious tournament, which serves as the lead-up and preparation for the Triple Crown. The tournament kicks off on Tuesday, September 6 at the Jockey Club in San Isidro, with the final scheduled for Saturday, September 20. Six teams, between 28 and 33 goals, will be in contention.
Team by team preview:
-
La Hache: Defending champions, fielding almost the same lineup as last year, with Nachi Du Plessis replacing Tomás Panelo.
-
Scone: Last year’s finalists and two-time champions (2022 & 2023). The lineup features Adolfo Cambiaso (eight-time champion), Tomás Panelo, David Paradice, and Lukin Monteverde.
-
Pilot: Curtis’ team returns after a two-year absence, with three of the last Palermo champions: Jeta and Barto Castagnola alongside Facu Pieres. The team last lifted the title in 2019 (Curtis and the three Pieres brothers).
-
La Aguada: The Triple Crown winners return to the Jockey Club Open after last competing in 2022. The same lineup will also be contesting the Qualification for the Argentine Open.
-
La Irenita: The Mac Donough family organization will bring the same team aiming to qualify for Palermo. Winners of the Jockey Club Open in 2010, they will look to kick off the spring season on the right foot.
-
Kazak: Making their debut in San Isidro, the recent finalists of the Gold Cup in England bring together two young talents —Beltrán Laulhé and Lorenzo Chavanne— alongside the experience of Polito Pieres and Juanma Nero, with the ambition of making a strong impact in Argentina.
